Infrastructure works
Devon County Council is overseeing the development of the Science Park’s infrastructure. Work is currently underway to complete the necessary roads and utilities which will service the site. Planning applications for the initial Science Park buildings will be submitted during 2011.
Redhayes Bridge
The construction of Redhayes Bridge, a landmark pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the M5, is one of the first steps in the development of the Science Park infrastructure.
Evolved from a study looking at Green Infrastructure in Exeter and East Devon, the 100 metre single span arch bridge is a key development for the Exeter and East Devon New Growth Point, and marks a massive investment in the future growth of the local economy.
The pedestrian and cycle bridge is an excellent example of how green travel routes can be built into major developments and reduce the need to travel by car. The cycle link provided by the new bridge also connects into Exeter's cycling network, which stretches throughout the city and across the growth area.
The Redhayes Bridge was officially opened in July 2011.
Northern infrastructure
The construction of the northern Infrastructure roads, services and plot for the Power Sub-Station in the North-West corner of the plot started on 25 October 2010, and has recently been completed.
Other infrastructure
Work is now underway for the infrastructure development on the rest of the Science Park site, including southern roads and services, and the development of Phase One of the Science Park itself. This work will be completed in 2011, with construction of the first buildings underway by 2012 for occupancy in 2013..
Junction 29
Motorway improvements seen as vital to the future of Exeter’s economy have been given the green light by the Government following the comprehensive spending review in October 2010. This will include improvements at junction 29 of the M5 to increase capacity, and the new link which will provide access to Exeter Science Park and the old A30. In addition, there are plans to provide bus lanes on the old A30. Work is now underway on these vital improvements.
